Sustaining Digital Learning Through People and Purpose

Digital learning has changed dramatically over the course of my career. What was once a distinct part of the educational experience is now embedded in nearly everything we do.  The distinction between “digital learning” and simply “learning” is increasingly difficult to make.

Technology influences how we teach, how students learn, how faculty develop, how staff support students, how leaders make decisions, and how all of us create, process, and share information. Artificial intelligence has only accelerated that shift. As a result, building sustainable digital learning cannot belong exclusively to academic affairs, information technology, or any single department. It requires all of us.

The challenge is determining what, exactly, we are trying to sustain.

We Cannot Always Sustain the Technology

Higher education does not have unlimited resources. Budgets change. Staffing changes.  Institutional priorities shift. Technologies that once seemed indispensable are replaced, discontinued, or simply outgrown. Even when the technology remains, the needs of the people using it continue to evolve.

This is one of the realities I have come to appreciate more deeply throughout my career: we cannot always sustain the tools, but we can sustain our ability to teach, learn, and work effectively with or without them.

Technology should enhance our capabilities, not become the capability itself. To use it effectively, we need to understand what it is doing for us and why. That understanding allows us to leverage technology when it serves our purpose while retaining the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to adapt when it does not.

That requires more than selecting the right tools. It requires creating practices that allow an institution to respond thoughtfully to change without losing sight of why the technology was introduced in the first place. A sustainable digital learning environment, then, is not one that preserves every system or practice indefinitely. It is one in which people can continue to teach, learn, adapt, and succeed as technology changes around them.

People Have to Come Before Technology

Putting people first does not mean resisting progress. It means ensuring that progress does not leave people behind.

Sustainability begins with recognizing that people experience technological change differently. Some faculty are eager to experiment with emerging technologies, while others need time, training, and evidence that a change will improve their teaching. Students arrive with varying levels of digital fluency, access, and experience. Staff must support increasingly technology-dependent processes. Leaders must weigh innovation against cost, risk, compliance, capacity, and institutional priorities.

None of these perspectives is inherently wrong. Sustainable practice has to make room for all of them. We cannot build for only those who are ready to move the fastest and expect everyone else to catch up.

Sustainable Practice Requires Shared Responsibility and Purpose

Perhaps nowhere is this balance more visible than in our current conversations about artificial intelligence. AI has created excitement about what may be possible and legitimate concern about what may be lost. Higher education does not have to choose between embracing every innovation and resisting technological change. Our responsibility is to ask better questions.

Does this improve teaching and learning? Are we building the capacity of the people expected to use it? What problem are we solving? And most importantly, how does this decision contribute to student success?

These questions are not the responsibility of one division. Faculty understand their disciplines and their students. IT professionals understand infrastructure, security, and systems. Student support professionals recognize barriers others may not see. Institutional leaders understand broader priorities and resources. eLearning and instructional technology professionals often work across these spaces, connecting technology to teaching and learning. Sustainability happens when those perspectives inform one another rather than compete for the spotlight.

Each perspective is necessary, but no single perspective is sufficient. Sustainable digital learning requires shared responsibility that extends across institutional boundaries. When priorities compete, our shared purpose must bring us back to common ground.

We cannot predict every technological change or implement every promising innovation, nor should we try. What we can control is how we respond: whether we listen beforeimplementing, investing in people's ability to grow, evaluating whether our choices are accomplishing their intended purpose, and pivoting when they are not.

Sustainability, then, is not about preserving technology. It is about developing practices and relationships strong and flexible enough to evolve with it.

Technology will continue to evolve. The platforms we rely on today will eventually give way to something else, but our central purpose should remain constant. Whatever comes next, our measure of progress should reflect a shared purpose and the people we ultimately hope to serve.
